Join us at the Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge for a peaceful morning of gardening in the Good Medicine Garden. We will be setting up garden beds, filling soil, planting, weeding, and mulching. Please bring a waterbottle, gardening gloves, and gardening tools if you have them (some tools will be available on site). This event is being held in support of longtime ELU member and previous ELU Cabinet member, Amanda Funk. Please read below to learn more!

This is an opportunity to support a longtime ELU member who has also served on the ELU Cabinet, Amanda Funk. Amanda is the lead educator and Director of the Widoktadwen Center for Native KnowledgeHer leadership, generosity, and deep cultural knowledge have shaped countless projects and people.

Recently, Amanda underwent emergency spinal surgery and is now in recovery. While she’s able to be present as a “project manager,” she cannot physically tend to the Good Medicine Garden — an ecological teaching space she has lovingly cultivated. As she shared, she’s nervous about organizational sustainability while she heals, and the garden has been left to fend for itself.

This is where you can help!

ABOUT THE GARDEN: Located on the property of Zions Spies Church at 310 Spies Church Rd, Reading (Alsace Township), this 20 ft x 40 ft ecological teaching garden includes aspects of the following: a mini food forest, edible perennial crops, a three sisters agriculture plot,  fiber and dye plants, and traditional medicine plants.

By volunteering your time and physical effort, you’ll help keep the Good Medicine Garden thriving during Amanda’s healing process. You’ll also have the chance to learn directly from her, gaining practical skills, cultural insight, and even doing a bit of foraging for berries and herbs to take home.
